Moses Daykin 1804 – 1888

Anyone who has traced their ancestry back to Moses will have the same question,  who was Moses father?.  At the time of writing there is no definite answer but I will look at the evidence that has been found in upcoming posts.

Stop press.       Could DNA hold the answer???

But back to the very beginning.  The baptism records for the Independent Chapel in Ilkeston, Derbyshire state that Moses was born on 19 Apr 1804 and baptised on 5 May he was the son of Elizabeth from Cossall. Further information on Cossall can be found on Wikipedia  https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cossall&oldid=1034529005

As there is no fathers name we can assume that Elizabeth was single, although there is no mention that Moses was illegitimate so another possibility could be that Elizabeth was a widow and her husband had died before Moses was born.

At present we know nothing about Moses formative years.  Our next opportunity of finding him is at his Marriage in 1826.

  1. Hello. I really like your website. Moses was my Great Great Grandfather I would like to connect with you to find out more about the family tree and perhaps I can provide some more information on some of the family members .

    1. Hi Nigel,
This is Sharon, Cecil and Edna’s granddaughter. Hope you, Val and the kids are keeping well.
The website needs a lot of updating it’s just finding the time at the moment. I have got a family tree on ancestry which has more details but would love to hear any family stories. If you don’t mind I’ll send some questions over.
I was nine when grandad died. I remember your dad, Walter, Jean , Frank, Den, Ed and Constance. I probably met others but don’t really remember.
Mum (Pat) and Lynn (Frank’s daughter) regularly meet and attend Notts County matches together I’m also in touch with Jonquil(Arch’s daughter) and Pamela (Keith’s) widow via Facebook.
I’ll update the website soon with the 1921 Census and add the newspaper report on Amy in court for attacking the local school teacher 😀.
Take care be in touch soon.
      Sharon

      1. Hi Sharon Great to hear from you – what a great site you are creating. We are all well over here and actually (COVID restrictions permitting) returning to the UK for a visit at the end of March – if you are around it would be great to meet up. I think I have somewhere a copy of the newspaper report about Amy and the school teacher and a letter from, if I remember, an architect in London who read the newspaper article and was so incensed by the “injustice” of Amy going to court that he sent her a money order to go towards her fine. Val says she is connected to you on Facebook so do message her anytime too. Happy to help with any questions if I can – feel free to email me anytime at nigel.daykin1@gmail.com – All the Best – Nigel
