John was baptised on 24th September 1827 at St Leonards, Wollaton. The parish records state that the family were living at Bramcote Moor.
Census 1841
John is now the eldest of six children. Although the detail on the ’41 census is minimal, at the age of 13 you would assume that he is working at the coal mine.

In Attercliffe cum Darnall near Sheffield. John is still a coal miner now aged 35 and is lodging with John Johnson (22) a coal miner born in Stapleford, wife Catherine Johnson (23) born Bramcote and daughter Mary (1) n.b. John gives a birthplace and Blankard (Bramcote) and is lodging next door to his brother Henry.
